The Company was established in 1918 to produce calcium carbide and cyanamid (fertilizer). Availability of electrical energy from the power plants on the Drava river made it possible to add more energy intensive product line such as ferrosilicon and ferrochrome. Products are used mainly in steel-plants and smelters. After 1945, the Company grew rapidly and diversified into other electrochemical products as well as fertilizer, insecticides, liquid nitrogen and oxygen and many complex alloys.

The company was transformed to joint - stock company in the year 1998.
